Obituary

Edna Mertz, Eventide Nursing Home resident, Jamestown, North Dakota, died Monday, December 29, 2025, at the nursing home, following a recent fall.

Edna Veil was born April 6, 1932, the oldest daughter of Jacob and Katherine (Bentz) Veil. She grew up in rural Gackle, attending country school there. Edna left the farm and moved to Jamestown to work with disabled children at Crippled Children School, now known as Anne Carlson Center. She was proud of the fact she worked beside Anne herself. She then attended school at New York Hairdressing Academy in Fargo, where she completed her education and worked as a hairdresser at Morck’s Beauty Shop, Jamestown, as well as a shop in New Rockford. She also worked at Ray’s Beauty Center in Mandan while teaching cosmetology and managing at Christie Beauty School in Bismarck.

Edna married Alvin Mertz on October 28, 1967, in Bismarck. Together they both farmed south of Dawson. Never having any children themselves, they worked hard raising cattle and growing grains, doing all the work themselves as a team. They remained on the farm until their retirement in 2015, when they moved to Napoleon. Edna was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon. On December 23, 2024, she entered Eventide Nursing Home in Jamestown.

Edna is survived by her sister, Loretta Fiechtner, Zimmerman, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Mertz; her parents; step-mother, Emelia Veil; her sister, Hertha Rau; brothers-in-law, Dwight Rau, and Ralph Fiechtner and nephew, James Rau.

Edna had one of the biggest smiles and such a warm heart. She will be missed dearly by all the staff. Always such a busy lady through out her life. I loved to visit with her, you could tell she was an educated lady. Thanks for letting us care and get to know Edna. Liza Danielson
