Obituary

Robert Hertel, 90, Jamestown, ND died Monday, May 20, 2019 at Ave Maria Village in Jamestown.

Robert  Hertel was born August 21, 1928 at McLaughlin, SD the son of Christian Hertel and Anna (Gutschmidt) Hertel.  He attended the local rural school where he received his elementary education and grew to manhood in the vicinity where he helped on the family farm.

He and Lillian Fregien were married April 2, 1950 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Jud, ND.  They made their home with her parents and later took over their farm.  In 1985 they sold their equipment and he started working for Rueben Schlenker and continued to reside on the farm.  He entered the Jamestown Heritage Center in 2009 and then Ava Maria Village in 2019.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Jamestown, ND, he was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran in Jud and served as deacon, trustee and council President.

Surviving are his wife Lillian, Jamestown, ND; one son and daughter-in-law, Darrel and Sharon Hertel, Jud, ND; 5 grandchildren,  24 great grandchildren, and 15 great great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Irene Biederstedt, Mobridge, SD and Verna Biederstedt, Armour, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother, Harold.

Funeral Service- 3:00 PM Monday, May 27, 2019 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Jamestown, ND with Rev. Erik Weber, pastor officiating.

Visitation- 2:00 PM Monday at the Church

Interment- 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 28, 2019 in the Jud Lutheran Cemetery, Jud, ND

Robert was such a nice man. We met him when my mom, Irene Staiger moved to the heritage centre. We always enjoyed visiting with him. He especially liked visiting with my husband, Monte Leno. They would talk and talk. Sure going to miss him!

I've known Robert my whole life. He and Lillian were a big part of my life, growing up. And, later in life, I got to spend time with him at the Heritage Centre. We are sorry we won't be able to attend the service, but Darrel, Sharon and family, you'll be in our thoughts. God bless.

Robert was such a good friend to my mom Adeline Mitchell at Heritage Centre during the time she lived there. He always was willing to help her and we came to know him very well. When my mom passed away last year, we continued to visit anytime we came to Jamestown. He loved going on country drives with us. We will miss him greatly.<br>Marvin and Mary Mitchell, Renton, WA.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Please find comfort in God's sure promise of a resurrection to a paradise earth, where sickness and death will be no more. "The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." (John 5:28,29) I hope that reflecting on these thoughts and your wonderful memories will give you some relief during this difficult time.
