Obituary

Loretta Catherine Nies, 97, formerly of Mott, ND passed into the arms of her Savior on November 25, 2022 at Eventide, Jamestown, ND.

Loretta was born on December 21, 1924 at Leola, SD to Konrad and Katherine (Rieger) Ehresman.

While teaching at a country school for a brief time, she married Herb Nies on May 20,1945. For a few years, they farmed in the McLaughlin, SD area. They moved to Reeder, ND and then to Mott, ND. They were very active members of Zoar Congregational Church, Mott.

Loretta was a cook at the school in Mott for 28 years. Hundreds of students benefited from the meals she made from "school food."

She always enjoyed it when any of her many family members came to visit. And, she enjoyed her travels to visit family on the east and west coasts and in the Dakotas and Minnesota.

She also lived a few years in retirement and nursing homes in Wishek, Gackle, and Jamestown, ND. Since her birthday was close to Christmas, a birthday tradition was to drive the streets of wherever she lived to view the Christmas lights.

Well into late in life, she loved to crochet and made many afghans for family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Konrad and Katherine (Rieger) Ehresman and step-father, Rudolph Aldinger; her husband, Herb Nies; brothers Ed, Willy, and Oscar Ehresman; step-brothers Delbert and Darwin Aldinger; sisters Leona (Ehresman) Noel, Martha (Ehresman) Erbe; and numerous step brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her sons Gerald (Patsy) Nies, Grand Forks, ND and Arlyn (Marcy) Nies, Alfred, ND; Grandchildren Beth Reiten (Shannon Kundey), Frederick, MD; Heidi (Brian) Gordon, Blaine, MN; Jeremy (Rachel) Nies, Hawley, MN; eight great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

As per her request, a private graveside service and burial will take place at Mott Cemetery, Mott, ND at a future date.

She was a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend to the many lives she touched.

Deepest sympathies to Loretta’s family. I remember so well the weeks she and Herb stayed with us kids when mom and dad went back to Indiana to visit moms family during school . Loretta would take me to school early with her as she was the school cook. She would make me toast to eat while waiting for school to start . They took good care of us kids while our parents were gone. Prayers for God’s peace and comfort. So many good friends together in glory !

Our deepest sympathy to her family. We were one of her neighbors in West Mott. Cut a big cottonwood tree down for her. God Bless.

Aunt Loretta was an extremely special person that always was warm and welcoming and made great German food. Always enjoyed visiting her. She will be missed but so happy she has a new body and is rejoicing in heaven today. I remember when she ordered several kugen for the family reunion and would get some special order rhubarb kugen for us when we came to visit. Such a treat!

Loretta is my aunt. My mom, Leona, and Aunt Loretta were very close sisters. I have lots of great memories growing up and having family reunions at the Nies house. Lots of aunts and uncles and cousins getting together. German food was unforgettable. Aunt Loretta even came to Washington state to visit us several times. Then later years, I would call and talk to Aunt Loretta on the phone most Sundays. If I didn't call her, she would call me. I miss those talks. I love you Aunt Loretta and I'm thankful your suffering is over and I will so you again.

Thank you Gerald and Arlen for bringing her to Wishek to live. I totally enjoyed her visits. We had many hours of crocheting and chit chatting. She even learned all about email and computers just to keep up with her family. Loretta was one of a kind and a real treasure. Rest In Peace my friend….
