Obituary

Phyllis (Johnson) Wentz, 95, of Streeter, ND passed away peacefully on Monday April 10, 2023 at the Gackle Care Center, Gackle, ND.

Phyllis was born on October 8, 1927, to Albert G and Amanda (Walters) Johnson in Pettibone, ND. She moved with her family to Dawson, ND where she attended elementary school and later moved with her mother and 6 siblings to Seattle, WA where she graduated from the 8th grade. On November 13, 1984 she earned her GED in Jamestown, ND.

When the US entered World War II, she, along with her younger sister, went to work in the shipyards in Seattle. Following the war, Phyllis and her youngest sister Ruby, hitch hiked back to North Dakota and on December 7, 1946, she and Emil A Wentz were united in marriage by Rev. N. E McCoy, in Jamestown, ND.  The couple made their home in Streeter where they raised their two children. Following the passing of her husband in 1998, Phyllis continued to live in Streeter until June of 2020 when she moved to the Gackle Care Center in Gackle, ND.

Phyllis was an active member of the Hope United Church of Christ involved in Women’s Guild, Sunday School, Youth Fellowship and served on the church council.

She is survived by her son, Cory (Linda) Wentz, daughter Joy (Michael) Molland. 3 grandchildren, Derek (Amanda) Wentz, Nicole (Ryan) Smestad, and Samuel Lunzman and 4 great grandchildren, Makenzie, Addison, Cody, and Raegan Smestad, 2 step granddaughters, Rebecca (Jason) Sinness and Teresa (Kevin) Putchio  and 7 step great grandchildren, Marissa Petitgout, Jakob Putchio, Bethany Putchio, Clara Henson, Emma, Dylan, and Parker Sinness, 1 sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 3 brothers - Jack, Robert (Bob), Ronald (Ronnie) and 4 sisters - Gilma, Gladys, Ruby, and Alice who died in infancy.

Joy, Cory & Families - So sorry to hear of the passing of Phyllis! I will never forget her being quite the opponent when we played BINGO in Streeter for many years! She always had something to say whether she won or lost! May all your memories help you through this difficult time!

Phyllis was a hoot! She always had to grab your arm when she was talking to you, because she wanted your full attention! I remember once when she was selling raffle tickets for the senior center and she knocked on my door while I was making supper. I told her to grab a spoon and keep stirring my sauce on the stove while I got my money. She stirred her heart out! Later when we were cleaning the lodge she informed me that I needed to learn how to make a bed the right way! Phyllis was a firecracker for sure! My sincere sympathies to the family.

So sorry about your mother. She was a super woman in her days. Helping people no matter who they were. She was one one of the angels who liked to help and that continued on even in the home. Some did not understand her ways but that was instilled in her way back. And maybe that was the Norwegian in her which she was very proud of. She had her good days and her painful days. And they were but she would not feel sorry for herself. She sti!l kept going strong. Your mother was a trooper. And now she can rest with no pain.
