Obituary

Mildred Zenker, 89, Gackle, ND died Friday February 2, 2024 at the Gackle Care Center surrounded by family.

Millie was born November 6, 1934 at Fredonia, ND, the daughter of David and Bertha (Wolf) Sukut. She attended the local rural school where she received her elementary education.

She and Malvin ‘Curly’ Zenker were married April 5, 1953 at Fredonia, ND. They made their home on the family farm west of Gackle where together they farmed until retiring in 1995. Following the death of her husband on August 26, 2010, she continued to live on the farm until December 2018, when she entered the Gackle Care Center.

Millie was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gackle, being very active in the women’s group and singing in the choir and various vocal ensembles. She even played the organ for a period of time. Her faith was important to her; her greatest joy was seeing her children and grandchildren involved and active in the church.

Although a hard worker on the farm and in her home, Millie enjoyed a great game of pinochle, bowling, and dancing especially with her dear Malvin.  She loved having her family gathered around her. She was a wonderful cook and baker; one could usually find some homemade cookies in the cookie container or some baked goodies in the freezer. She was a fine seamstress and had a special ability to patch pants and overalls as many family members can attest.  She enjoyed quilting and the friendships made around the quilting frame.

She is survived by her 5 children, Joel Zenker, Gackle, ND; Corinne Zenker, Steele, ND; Sharlene (Ken) Gumke, Jamestown, ND; Warren (Linda) Zenker, Gackle, ND; Teresa (Jeremy) Nelson, Fargo, ND; 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 1 great granddaughter, Mercedes; 3 brothers, Raymond, Harold, and Isadore, and 2 sisters, Esther and Irene.

My dear Aunt Mildred was such a wonderful person and the last of our aunts on both my mother and father's side. She made the best strudels and kuchen. She always welcomed you into her home with a big hug, smile and something to eat! I have many fond memories of her from childhood to this, my 75th year of life. That's a lot of memories! She was so devout in her faith and walked the way of our Lord. Heaven has a new angel, I know. We all will miss her very much but rejoice in knowing she is at peace and in the Lord's loving arms. Rest in peace, dear Auntie.
