Obituary

Lee A. Hennings, 90, Jamestown, ND, died Thursday, September 17, 2026, at SMP Health – Ave Maria in Jamestown.

Lee was born December 12, 1935, on the family farm near Jamestown, the son of Edward and Ann (Young) Hennings. He was the 12th of 13 children. He grew up in the area, attending the local school and later working as a farmhand.

Lee and Thelma Benson were married December 12, 1963, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Jamestown. They made their home in Jamestown, where Lee worked at the State Hospital for a couple of years before beginning his career in maintenance with the North Dakota State Highway Department. He worked there for more than 30 years before retiring in 1993.

Lee enjoyed woodworking, gardening, playing harmonica, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a gifted craftsman and especially enjoyed woodworking. Lee was always willing to help a neighbor and could often be found working on small engines or tackling a handyman project. He passed those skills on to his grandchildren, teaching them how to work on cars and fix things themselves.

As a young fella my pops would bring us up to Jamestown every summer and I remember Uncle Lee pinching with that claw or tugging on the ear with it when you did something wrong I'm going to miss him. My prayers go out to you all love you

Lee worked with my dad. I remember going with my mom to go and help Thelma with the triplets. They came to our house for visits and sometimes stayed for dinner. Lee and Thelma are the kindest people one would ever meet in a lifetime. Godspeed Lee. My deepest condolences to Thelma and family.

When I was young my mom and I would drive to Jamestown and stay with my Aunt Thelma and Uncle Lee. When we would finally get there the first thing I would do was go find my Uncle. He was almost always in his garden. He would pick me up and give me a big Ole hug and then try to pinch me with what I would call his claw. He then would chase me to the house so he could help my mom and they could say their hellos. Uncle Lee would then sit down on his chair and of course I would plop on his lap to be tortured by tickles. I will never forget those times with him. You my dear Uncle will always be in my thoughts and will be greatly missed. To my Aunt Thelma and cousins. Hugs to you! Sending my condolences. ❤️

Remembering the good ‘ole days growing up a couple houses away from the Hennings household and Mr Hennings always tinkering in their garden. He was always so nice to all the neighborhood kids. Sympathy to his family and friends.

As a snot nosed kid sitting in the back of Lee's Buick station wagon...Lonesome cattle call by Eddie Arnold comes on the radio...turns it up as loud as it would go. Got to watch my Aunt and uncle smile and sing along. Knew then these are my kind of people...life was good...miss those days. Bob aka Tuffy
