Cora Lee Hayes, 87, of Jamestown, North Dakota, passed away July 29, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family after a life devoted to faith, family, and caring for others.
Bom on June 25, 1939, to Bert and Emma Grenz, Cora was the youngest of four daughters. She graduated from Ellendale High School before earning her Registered Nursing degree from the Mercy School of Nursing In Valley City in 1960.
On September 2, 1960, she married the love of her life, Glen Hayes, beginning a marriage that spanned 65 years and served es an example of unwavering love, faithfulness, and devotion.
Cora dedicated more than six decades to nursing. She began her career at Jamestown Hospital before serving on the obstetrics floor at Mercy Hospital. She eventually found her true calling in memory care, where she compassionately served residents and their families for more than 40 years. Although she attempted retirement several times, her passion for caring for others continually drew her back. Even after entering hospice care, she continued working on an on-call basis-a testament to the servant's heart that defined her life.
Family was Cora's greatest joy. She is survived by her beloved husband, Glen Hayes; her son, Greg Hayes, of Jamestown; her daughter, Sarah (Kevin) Zaun, of Valley City; eight grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Cora will be remembered for her remarkable work ethic, her compassionate heart, and her feisty spirit. She faithfully attended family gatherings, celebrated every milestone, and took genuine Interest in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her home was always a place where everyone felt welcome, and her famous Special K bars became a treasured tradition at every holiday and family celebration.
Above all else, Cora loved the Lord. Alongside Glen, she built a family rooted in Christian faith, leaving a legacy that continues through generations. Her unwavering trust in Jesus, her love for others, and her selfless service will remain her greatest gifts to those who knew and loved her.
Memorial Service- 11:00 AM Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Victory Lutheran Church in Jamestown, ND with Pastor Shawn Bowman, officiating.
