Obituary

Thomas Lee Topp, beloved father, brother, twin, veteran, businessman, artist, and friend, passed away peacefully on May, 20, 2026 at the age of 74.

Born and raised in Minnesota, Thomas developed a strong work ethic, deep curiosity, and creative spirit that would define his life. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. His military service remained an important source of pride throughout his life.

Following his return home, he moved to Jamestown, ND and met his first wife, Gladys (Toni) Zimney (Tanata). Together they welcomed one child, Elsie. Later in life, he remarried and found companionship and happiness before being widowed.

Professionally, Thomas was a talented and respected businessman with exceptional skill in computers and computer programming. Long before technology became part of everyday life, he possessed a natural ability to understand and work with complex systems. He worked to help others understand technically through creation of a computer program, Dr. DOS, in the early 1990's. His intelligence, dedication, and innovative thinking earned the admiration of colleagues and friends alike.

Outside of his professional life, he was also a gifted artist who found joy and peace through painting. His artwork reflected both his creativity and thoughtful nature, and he shared that talent generously with those around him. His art offered an outlet for him to channel his reflections of his combat experiences.

A man of deep faith, Thomas was actively involved in his church community and treasured the fellowship and friendships he found there. He valued conversation, connection, and service to others, and he will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, humor, and steady presence.

Thomas is survived by his daughter, Elsie Motter (Aaron); his grandchildren, Ross and Brayden Motter; his siblings Leslie Pettis (Dale), Joseph Topp (Linda), and P.
