Elma Muonio, 91, formerly of Gackle, ND, died Friday, July 10, 2009 at the Hi-Acres Manor in Jamestown, ND.
Elma Mary Dormanen was born June 10, 1918 at Fredonia, ND, the daughter of Louie and Martha (Homola) Dormanen. She spent her early years in Lead, SD and Fredonia, ND where she received her education and grew to womanhood.
She and Arnold Muonio were married November 22, 1938 at Napoleon, ND. They made their home on the farm south of Gackle. Following the death of her husband, Elma and her five children moved into Gackle. After her children were grown, she spent her winters in Minneapolis, MN working as a nanny/housekeeper for 13 years. In January 2009, Elma became a resident at the Gackle Care Center, and in May she entered Hi-Acres Manor in Jamestown.
Although Elma enjoyed gardening, sewing and quilting, she cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren and crocheted many baby afghans and made dolls and doll clothes for them.
Survivors include sons Richard (Marcia) of Livonia, MI and Gary (Margaret) of Victoria, MN; daughters Joanne (Gene) Lunzman of Gackle, ND and Arlene (George) Nelson of Brooklyn Park, MN; 37 grandchildren and over 100 great grandchildren; sisters Nancy (Frank) Uskoski of Kalispell, MT and Eleanor (Robert) Tapani of Battle Ground, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Elma in death were her parents, her husband, son Donald, three grandchildren, brother, Melvin, and sisters Ellen, Florence, Irene, and Fredericka at birth.
The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church, south of Gackle, ND, with Daryl Bellikka, officiating. Elma was a lifelong member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church.
Interment will be at the Homola Cemetery SW of Gackle, ND, with a lunch served immediately following at the church.
Visitation - 9 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Monday @ the funeral home in Gackle.
