Obituary

Sarah Sommerfeld, 95, Gackle, ND died early Monday evening December 14, 2009 at the Med Center One Golden Manor in Mandan, ND.

Sarah Knodel was born March 24, 1914 south of Streeter, ND, the daughter of Jacob Knodel Jr. and Christine (Fandrich) Knodel. She received her elementary education in Streeter, ND. She worked for Noah Schlasinger and also for Harry Mackin Hotel for many years at Streeter, ND

She and Henry Sommerfeld were married October 17, 1937 at Gackle, ND. They made their home on his parent's farm until 1956 when they moved into Gackle and built a new home. She worked for the Gackle Locker Plant until her retirement. Following the death of her husband in 1993, she has continued to reside in Gackle.

She was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Gackle, ND. She enjoyed doing her crafts, quilting, gardening, canning and being active in her church. She also enjoyed time with her cats.

She is survived by her daughter, Myrna Dethloff, Bismarck, ND; two sons, Harley (Candis) Sommerfeld, Fargo, ND; Myron (Jenneice) Sommerfeld, Valley City, ND, six grandchildren , Bonnie, Dan, Matt, Julie, Lori and Marcus, one sister, Jackie Beach, Milwaukee, OR.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandson, Scott, three sisters, Bertha, Amelia, Adelia and one brother in infancy.

The funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday December 19, 2009 at the First United Church of Christ in Gackle, ND with Rev. Tim Blackman, officiating.

The internment will be at the Gackle Cemetery in Gackle, ND.

Visitation: 9-8 Friday at the funeral home in Gackle.

While I never met Mrs. Sommerfeld, I can infer her many wonderful qualities from my enjoyable association with Harley, Myron, and Myrna during our years together at VCSU. My condolences to you and your families.
