Donald (Donnie) Kvislen, Jr., 62, Modesto, CA, formerly of Jamestown, ND died Monday January 11, 2010 at Hampton Care Facility, Stockton, CA.

Donnie Kvislen was born October 31, 1947 at Jamestown, ND, the son of Donald Kvislen, Sr. and Irma (Mueller) Kvislen. He received his education at Jamestown, ND and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1965 and entered the US Navy. He served in the Vietnam War, where he was wounded in action; receiving the Purple Heart for his valor. He was honorably discharged.

In 1976 Donnie was chosen Outstanding Handicapped Citizen of Jamestown and also received honorable mention for Outstanding Handicapped Citizen of North Dakota.

He married Anita Taylor on June 28, 1968 in Jamestown, ND. They made their home in Jamestown until the late Seventies upon graduating from Valley City State University. He began working at the North Dakota State Hospital as an Addictions Councilor. He also taught school in Woodworth, ND. He eventually moved out of state to California and has resided there. He worked as a Veteran's Claims Representative with the California Department of Veteran's Affairs in San Francisco.

Donnie had a strong passion for Baseball. He coached the Jamestown Merchants baseball team and Greenwood Plumbing Softball. He also played on the Legion team for 3 years.

Don enjoyed traveling, meeting new friends, going to movies and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a member of the Calvary Temple Church in CA.

He is survived by 1 son, Kevin Kvislen, Central Valley, CA; 1 daughter, Debra Wittenbrink, Central Valley, CA; his father, Donald (Helen) Kvislen, Sr., Jamestown, ND; 1 sister, Kathy Kvislen, Jamestown, ND; 2 brothers, Kent (Janet) Kvislen, Mankato, MN; Kyle (Carolyn) Kvislen, Bismarck, ND; 4 grandchildren and 7 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, grandparents, aunts and uncles.

The Memorial service will be at 1:00 PM Friday January 29, 2010 at the United Presbyterian Church in Jamestown, ND with Pastor Dave Thompson, officiating.

The interment will be at the Highland Home Cemetery in Jamestown, ND (in the spring).

Prayer service - 7:00 PM Thursday January 28, 2010 at the United Presbyterian Church in Jamestown, ND.

In Lieu of Flowers family prefers Memorial the American Red Cross.

Kent, I have been thinking about you and yours and wanted to drop you a note as there are a few things I wanted to share. I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to meet and spend some time with your brother Don, over the years. I always enjoyed our discussions and had, and still do have, a tremendous amount of respect for him. Those that have fought for and served our country are the ones that have given me, my family and my friends the wonderful opportunities we are fortunate enough to enjoy. Thanks to you, Kent, I had the opportunity a couple of times to express to Don my gratitude for his service and my respect for him, but I do truly regret that I haven't had the chance to express that to him lately. As we all know, Don went through things in life that, thanks to guys like him, you and I probably won't have to experience. It is also obvious to me that our society never served him as well as he served us. That being said, I am confident, and have faith in the fact, that Don now has the peace and joy that he has always deserved. continued on next message:

continued from previous message: It is also clear to me, Kent, that Don felt blessed to have you and Janet as a brother and sister in law, because he expressed that to me. He was correct to feel blessed as I do for the same reason. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you, Kent, as you go through this tough time. What a nice picture of Donnie! As I told Kent, he was my hero, and my teacher when I was younger. Many people don't like the song, The Twelve Days of Christmas, but it reminds me of Donnie, as he taught me that song when we were little. I remember summer picnics, the fair, and fireworks when the Mueller or Kvislen cousins would be in town (sometimes both). I was always included, whether it be Mueller or Kvislen, because of Donnie. I know he is with Auntie Irma and Grandma Hattie, and they are having a great reunion, along with the fun Kvislen aunts and uncles. I'll miss ya my friend, and dear cousin. Lulee
