Milton Schmeichel, 89, Jamestown, ND died Saturday morning January 11, 2014 in Eventide at Hi-Acres in Jamestown, ND.

Milton Max Schmeichel was born August 22, 1924 at Freeman, SD, the son of August Schmeichel and Elisebeth (Feidler) Schmeichel. He received his elementary education in the local rural school and grew to manhood in the vicinity where he helped on the family farm.

He and Mavis Waterman were married February 4, 1948 at Geddes, SD. They made their home on his parent's farm. They later moved to Unityville, SD where they farmed until moving to Spencer, SD where he worked at a canvas company. In 1961 they moved to Yankton, SD where he started Yankton Canvas Co. In 1972 he moved the business to Jamestown which he operated. He entered Hi-Acres Manor in 2002 where he has continued to reside.

He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, boating, hunting and fishing with his family. He also enjoyed playing an Electric Hawaiian guitar and spending time at family gatherings. Milton was a Spiritual Leader for his family.

Surviving are his wife Mavis, Jamestown, ND his children, Marla (Chuck) Wubben, Norfolk, NE; Carol Jensen, Montpelier, ND; Steven Schmeichel, Charles (Kristy) Schmeichel, Debra Wilhelm, Teri Schmeichel, James Schmeichel, Kurt (Beth) Schmeichel, Chad (Special friend Denise Baldwin) ,Van Schmeichel all of Jamestown, ND, Jay (Heidi) Schmeichel, Bismarck, ND, 35 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; two brothers, Henry Schmeichel, Salem, SD and Roy(Rose) Schmeichel, Sioux Falls, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son in infancy, two sons-in-law, Larry Jensen and Dan Wilhelm and one brother Gerhardt.

Funeral Service will be at 1:00 PM Thursday January 16, 2014 in St. Pauls United Methodist Church in Jamestown, ND with Rev. David Simmons officiating

Prayer Service: 7:00 PM Wednesday at the Funeral Home

Interment will be made in the Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown, ND.

Visitation 9-8 Wednesday at the funeral Home

your Husband, father, grand father, great grandfather had remarkable character. He was a man of interest when he entered a room it sparkled from his smile and laughter. He will truly be missed by all who knew him, cherish the wonderful memories that you will have for ever and pass them on to your loved ones in this time of great deep sorrow. May the love and family bond guide you together as one unit of Family love and support and comfort for your mother at this great lost of the Man she loved forever.

My Uncle Remembered: In our childhood years (50 to 60 years ago), when we had family reunions, Uncle Milton was always there with a big smile on his face along with his recognizable, pull you in laughter, making sure every kid had fun as well as the adults. Everyone always wanted to hear whatever he had to say and I think that loving trait carried him thru life always putting others in front of him for what ever reason he felt necessary. His learned advice was always welcome, even if you didn't ask for it, and always presented with a smile from his heart. As was our grandpa, Milton was thoroughly about family and happiness in life as it happened. I know of no other man in the Schmeichel clan, that helped make so many so successful, which says a lot about his character and drive. I miss this loving man immensely and my strong memory of him will never fade away. Even though this is a sad time for all, hopefully your memories will carry you to happier moments too, so the sorrow isn't so heavy!! With Love to all: Bobby Schmeichel

Uncle Milton, what a giving of himself to everyone he meet. I remember spending my summers with his family. (what a loving and caring family, he and Mavis instilled that in their family, I believe)Whenever I make homemade pickles, I would think of him always. The smell of the pickling would get anybody because it smelled so good. Just think we all have such wonderful memories of such a charming man. He will be loss by many, however we all have our memories of that big smile of his.

My heart is sad to loose my one and only Grandpa. I will forever remember as a little girl every time I would see my Grandpa he would smile at me and point to his cheek for a kiss. Those kisses are even more special as I carry them with me. I can thank him too for my love of pickles. I remember going to his house and the kitchen table full of jars of pickles. What I would do for one last jar of his pickles. What an amazing legacy he left his family. Kind, caring, generous and hard working. I owe my drive to build my own business from him. His love for God has been passed down to generations. His prayers were always genuine and touched my heart. I will continue to grow my relationship with God because of the example he set. Forever in my heart Grandpa.
