Art Schmidt, 91, Gackle, ND died Sunday May 4, 2014 at the Wishek Hospital in Wishek, ND.
Arthur Schmidt was born May 10, 1922 on the family farm near Gackle, ND, the son of John Schmidt and Christina (Bentz) Schmidt. He received his education at the local school and completed 2 years of high school before entering into farming with his father and brother.
He and Rachel Janke were married June 30, 1946 in Gackle. They made their home on a farm 10 miles south of Gackle where they had a grain and dairy farm. They retired from farming in 2007. They enjoyed traveling in their retirement years. After the death of his wife in 1999 Art continued to reside on the farm until he moved into Gackle. He later moved into Jamestown, ND and in 2011 he moved to Wishek where he continued to reside.
He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gackle and was on various committees.
He is survived by his 4 sons, Rodney (Clareen) Schmidt, Chandler, AZ; Ardell (Barbara) Schmidt, Gackle, ND; Donavan (Roxie) Schmidt, Hudson, IA; Emery (Jim Swearingen) Schmidt, New Port, KY; 1 daughter, Mary Ann (Wayne) Widmer, Jud, ND; 6 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Edwin Schmidt, Stillwater, MN; 1 sister, Flora Schweitzer, Boise, ID; Brother-in-law Willie (Joann) Janke, Gackle, ND and good friends and neighbors, Gloria Schoonover and Judy Schultz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rachel and 1 brother, Eldo.
The funeral service will be at 1:30 PM Saturday May 10, 2014 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gackle, ND, with Pastor Rick Steele, officiating.
Interment will be at the St. James Lutheran Cemetery South of Gackle, ND
Visitation: 9 – 5 Friday at the Haut Funeral Chapel in Gackle
Prayer Service: 7:00 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gackle.
