Obituary

Rose (Schumacher) Rau, 86, Jamestown, ND went peacefully to be with her husband Edwin in heaven on Sunday February 22, 2009, with her children by her side, at the Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center at Jamestown, ND.

Rose Schumacher was born December 24, 1921 on the family farm near Tappen, ND, the daughter of Jacob Schumacher and Eva (Dockter) Schumacher. She was 1 of 12 children. She received her elementary education at the local rural school and grew to woman hood in the vicinity and helped work on the family farm.

She and Edwin Rau were married May 31, 1940 in Napoleon, ND. They made their home on the family farm SW of Streeter in the Flats. In 1950, they moved into Streeter where she worked for the Creamery and Strehle Grocery. They also owned and operated the Café/Recreation Hall and a Truck line. They then moved to Jamestown where she worked at the Parkway Café, Mac's Restaurant and Cut Low Grocery. They moved to Fargo for Edwin's work with the Wilbert Vault Co. and she worked for Leeby's Grocery for a short time. At the time they lived in Fargo they had a band (Polkateers/Shades of Blue) which kept her and her husband busy playing for many dances in the area. Rose played the electric organ and all was by ear. They brought their music to Jamestown when they moved back, playing in many clubs and for the Senior Citizens. This kept them young and energetic, and to Rose, playing the organ was a way of relaxation. She had a special love for small children and in her later years, babysat for little ones in her home. In March of 2006 they moved to the Rock of Ages in Jamestown, and in March of 2007 she entered Hi-Acres Manor.

Rose kept busy with making Afghans and quilts for all her children and grandchildren and always made sure there were baked items in the house to eat and food on the table. One would never leave her house hungry.

Rose was always concerned about her family and made sure all were cared for and happy. She worked side by side with her husband during their 67 years of marriage.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Jamestown, ND

She is survived by 1 son, Donald, Jamestown, ND; 1 daughter and son-in-law, Arlene (Al) Weidner, Halliday, ND; 6 grandchildren, Vanessa Beaubuien, Kay Olson, Jerry (Anita) Rau, Gary (RoxAnne) Rau, Paula (Todd) Loegering and Wade Hunt; 8 great grandchildren; 3 great, great grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 7 step great grandchildren, 2 step great, great grandchildren, 2 special children MaKayla and Cody; 1 brother Marvin (Janice) Clarksville, IA and 1 sister Emma Werre, Bismarck, ND.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edwin, August 13, 2007; 1 son-in-law, George, 5 sisters (1 in infancy) and 5 brothers.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 AM Friday February 27, 2009 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Jamestown, ND with Rev. Harlan Kaden, officiating.

I remember going to Fargo with my Mother and Grandmother to visit Uncle Edwin and Aunt Rose. It was so much fun to tag along when they went out to play their music. It was obvious that they truly enjoyed what they were doing and loved to share their music with others.

I will always remember Rose as one of the large Schumacher family of parents and siblings who supported dad through all his years of being in the ministry. Her sense of humor and genuine caring for everyone made her a very special person. My heartfelt condolences to her children and descendants. We will all miss her.
