Obituary

Pauline Mary Haag, 76, of Fredonia, ND died peacefully at the St. Rose Care Center, LaMoure, ND, on December 30, 2024.

Pauline (“Polly”) was born to Raymond and Katie (Kleingartner) Haag on March 17, 1948, near Fredonia, North Dakota. She was raised on the family farm two miles northwest of Fredonia and began her elementary education at Haag #4 rural school, the same school her father attended (Ray occasionally took Polly to school during the winter months in a horse drawn sleigh). When the country school closed, Polly continued her early education at the school in Fredonia, before graduating from Kulm High School in 1966. In her senior year, Polly was selected as Kulm High's "Homecoming Queen," a rather unique occurrence for a farm girl from Fredonia in those days. Polly was very artistic and designed the image of the "Gopher" that became the school's logo up through the late 90's. Polly's artistic ability took her to the University of North Dakota prior to her moving to California and the beach and ocean that she loved.

Polly's creativity, imagination, and eye for design was a lifelong passion and was demonstrated through calligraphy, drawings, interior decorating and specialty gifts for family and friends. Polly was also an outstanding cook and used her knowledge of the interaction of ingredients and spices to create delectable dishes. She loved cats, collecting shells, was well read, and possessed a very inquisitive mind and a unique perspective on the world around her.

Always the caring daughter, sister and companion, Polly nurtured and cared for others her entire life. She loved her four brothers, sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Polly returned to Kulm, ND in 2009 to care for her mother and very much enjoyed making sure all visiting family and friends were welcomed with warmth and hospitality. She took a genuine interest in the lives of everyone she met. While the transition from CA to ND was a major life change, the companionship and support from family, friends and the Fredonia and Kulm communities were a constant in her life that she very much appreciated.

Polly was a hostess, bar tender and catering manager. She loved growing flowers and vegetables. Polly was a two-time cancer survivor.

Polly endured a brave battle with dementia and succumbed to a disease whose symptoms deprived Polly of all she embodied. Polly was preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Katie Haag. Polly is survived by her four brothers: Glynn Haag (Dianne), Alvin Haag (Theresa), Todd Haag (Debbie) and Tim Haag (Lisa); her nine nieces and nephews Kelley and James, Jody, Becky and Courtney, Mitchell and Ryan and Alex and Brady and a growing number of great nieces and nephews.

Polly was a very special cousin. She was very creative and artistic. I went to visit her years ago and she was refurbishing her kitchen cabinet. She could take something simple and make it beautiful. I wish I would’ve been able to see her more often, but , the times I did see her will always be wonderful memories. God bless you cousin
