I must credit Johnny with my first real ND experience. 1998- My 1st trip to ND to meet my husband's (then boyfriend) family in Cavalier, ND. Bob, Johnny's cousin, had us come down to Gackle to meet more Schlittenhards. I am a California girl and had never been to the northern great plains. I was sitting amongst the guys on the porch and feeling really out of place with the conversation revolving around agriculture, hunting and unfamiliar food. Cousin Johnny then puts on polka music... at that moment, I went into extreme culture shock. After my husband coaxed me from our room, I really ended up enjoying our visit with Johnny and Sharon. He was such a joy to be around and would laugh until my sides hurt. We had several great visits at their home and in Gackle over the years.
