Obituary

James Barry Winkler, age 58, died Friday, December 18, 2020 at St. Rose Care Center in LaMoure, North Dakota after a brief, yet brave, battle with cancer.

Jim, the youngest son of Walter and Josephine (Zachmeier) Winkler, was born on August 22, 1962 in Valley City, North Dakota. He grew up on a farm near Oriska, North Dakota, and graduated from Oriska Public High School. Jim attended North Dakota State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in General Agriculture. While at NDSU Jim joined Alpha Gamma Rho, a fraternity for students majoring in agriculture. Jim was a long-time resident of Jamestown, North Dakota.

Jim was a gracious, kind person, who deeply loved his parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, godchild, and cousins. He always looked forward to visits and phone calls with his extended family. He treasured family reunions, and especially enjoyed family gatherings in Red Lodge, Montana. He loved the beautiful scenery of the mountains. Jim also cherished his friends. A weather enthusiast and fan of the Weather Channel, Jim closely followed the local weather and extreme weather events across the country. Jim was always up for a card game, favoring rummy, Skip-bo, and pinochle, and remembering every card played in the course of a game. He enjoyed NFL football, and avidly followed the Minnesota Vikings.

Jim is survived by his seven siblings, Julie (Richard Schwartz) of Haslett, Michigan; Jeanne (Steven) Lillegard of Stanford, Montana; Walter Joseph of Fairborn, Ohio; Robert (Season) of Bayfield, Colorado; Michael (Nanette) of Dupont, Washington; Patrick of Manila, Philippines; Joni of Bangor, Maine; and nine nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
