Obituary

Ethan Lawrence Igl, 19, Jamestown, ND passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at his home with his family in Jamestown after an 8-month battle with cancer.

Ethan was born on December 28, 2004 in Jamestown, ND. He is the son of Larry and Amy (Tomaska) Igl and the brother of Alex Igl. He grew up in Jamestown, attending Saint John’s Academy for elementary school and graduating from Jamestown High School in May 2023. He attended Iowa State University in the fall of 2023, majoring in electrical engineering, before he was diagnosed with germ cell cancer.

Ethan enjoyed running, biking, and swimming. In high school, he was active in track, cross country, and swimming, and was the team captain for both cross country and swimming. Ethan loved playing the trombone and piano and was active in several bands in high school, including jazz band and marching band. He was selected as a drum major of the marching band in his junior year. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the Science Olympiad team. Ethan was a lifelong Boy Scout. He started scouts in first grade and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout during his senior year of high school. At Iowa State University, Ethan was a member of the PrISUm Solar Car Club and competed in Super Smash Brothers tournaments. Ethan especially loved to play the Magic the Gathering card game with his friends.

Ethan was a smart, funny, fun-loving, kind, and compassionate young man who left this world much too early. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved life to the fullest and always had an infectious smile. He battled cancer valiantly for 8 months while always having a positive attitude. Ethan will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him. He was the kind of young man that anyone would be proud to call son, grandson, brother, and friend.

Ethan is survived by his parents, Amy and Larry (Jamestown, ND); brother, Alex (Las Cruces, NM); grandmother, Wanda Tomaska (Carlinville, IL); Aunt Melissa and Uncle Doug Olivero (Peru, IL); Uncle and godfather, John Tomaska (Ft. Ethan was a great friend and will always be one of "the bois". My favorite memories of him would be all the times we terrorized our band teacher Ms Lund. Hearing random trombone slides or swinging songs that were never meant to be swung. I'm really gonna miss hearing him play. Im gonna miss his goofy sense of humor everyday at the lunch table. I'm gonna miss how he taught me super smash bros but still kicked my butt everytime on every music trip we took. I'm gonna miss one of the bois being gone. I loved him like a brother. He will be dearly missed.
