Norman Miller

Norman E. Miller, Gackle, ND passed away peacefully on July 16th 2021 at Vibra Hospital in Mandan, ND.

Norman was born August 9th, 1940 at the family farm to Mathilda (Gienger) and Emil Miller.  He was baptized September 27, 1940 at the Neudorf Lutheran church in Neudorf Township and confirmed on July 3rd, 1955 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Gackle.  He received his elementary education in the local Neudorf Township County school.  He went on to graduate from Gackle High School in 1958.  After graduation, he continued to help his parents on the family farm.  In 1960, Norman enlisted in the US Army and served for 2 years.  Fifteen months of that time was spent in Korea.

Norman was a member of the American Legion, served on the FHA board, elevator board, and future development board of Gackle.  He taught Sunday school for 9 years at Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Norman married Karen Buerkle on October 24th, 1965 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church.  They lived on the former Jacob Zenker farm from 1965-1969.  They then made their family home on the Miller family homestead southwest of Gackle.

Norman and Karen were blessed with 2 daughters, Anita born in 1969 and Katina born in 1973.

Norman loved all aspects of farm life with haying season being his favorite.  He grew corn, wheat, soybeans, sunflowers, and flax.  He milked dairy cows for 35 years and had a beef cow herd along side for many years.

“Stormin Norman” was known for his hard work and somewhat unusual ways to farm.  So much so, he was known as the man with 9 lives.  Even in his last days, from his hospital bed, he was farming, giving orders, selling wheat, and planning how to complete those last 3 projects.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Karen and 2 daughters, Anita (Scott) Hoger, Brenna, Fayth, and Kendyl all of New Salem ND; Katina (Jared) Sprenger and Jace, Mandan, ND; his twin brother , Norbert (Eileen) Miller, West Fargo, ND; Sister-in Laws, Pat Miller, Valley City, ND; JoAnne (Marvin) Miller, Gackle, ND; Marcene (Henry) Veil, Jamestown, ND, Nieces and Nephews, Luther Miller, Randy (Hannah) Miller; Angela ( Hugo) Villareal, Sarah (Adeel) Afzal.    Brian Veil, JoDell (Daryl) Stading, Denise (Kevin) Stoppleworth and many other great nieces and nephews.
