Lawrence Nitschke, 79, Jamestown, ND died early Tuesday morning, August 23, 2011 at his home in Jamestown, ND.

Larry was born February 24, 1932 in Alfred, ND, the son of Otto Nitschke and Emma (Klundt) Nitschke. He received his elementary education in the Alexander Township and grew to manhood and helped on the family farm. He worked for various farmers in the Alfred area and also worked at the Alfred Elevator.

Larry was drafted into the Army April 18, 1952 in Fargo, ND. He trained in Ft. Leonardwood, MO and served 11 months in France. He received a Service Award in 1954 at Saint Nazaire, France. He was honorably discharged March 23, 1954 at Ft. Sheridan, IL with the rank of PFC.

Larry and Shirley Wegner were married at the Congregational Church in Alfred on June 12, 1955. They moved to Washington for a few months before moving to Jamestown, ND, and starting work with Midwest Motors. He was later employed with Melland's Implement as a Mechanic. He then worked for Jamestown Implement until his retirement.

Larry was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jamestown. He was also a member of the American Legion Leno-Schlenker Post #295 in Alfred and Jamestown for a total of 50 years. He also was a board member of the Stutsman County Museum in Jamestown.

Larry enjoyed traveling, snowmobiling with his grandsons, old tractors and relaxing at their home in Alfred, ND.

Larry is survived by his wife, Shirley, Jamestown, ND; 3 children, Lynne (Brad) Newark, Gig Harbor, WA; Lance (Shiela) Nitschke, West Fargo, ND; Landon (Staci) Nitschke, Snohomish, WA; 4 grandchildren, Luke, Lee, Logan, Lawson; 2 brothers, Jerry (Connie) Nitschke, Wamego, KS; Emmet (VerDella) Nitschke, Jamestown, ND; 3 sisters, Jeannine Nitschke, Jamestown, ND; Darlene (Norbert) Schlenker, Winston, OR; and Karen (Lee) Sears, Davenport, IA.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; 1 daughter, Janie; 3 sisters, Jermaine, Joyce, Carol, and 3 brothers, Milton, Dwight and Kenneth.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 AM Saturday August 27, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Jamestown, ND with Rev. Wayne Bangs, officiating.

The interment will be at Sunset Memorial Garden in Jamestown, ND.

Prayer Service: 7:00 PM Friday @ the funeral chapel in Jamestown
