He married Lorraine Elisabeth Vossler on July 7, 1954, in Ashley ND., they divorced in 1979.
Howie moved to Jamestown ND in 1980 where he lived the remainder of his life.
He was always a hardworking ambitious go-getter type of guy, willing to help out or learn a new skill. He was self-taught in most all of his projects. He was raised on the family farm. His first job away from the farm was as a journeyman electrician. He had a very charismatic personality and was introduced into vacuum sales initially selling Filter Queens, then a very successful 38-year career as Distributor of Kirby Vacuums, first in Bothell Washington and his last in South Sioux City Nebraska. Over the years he was honored with numerous awards and helped to shape the careers of many men and women. Although he slowed down, Howie never truly retired. He always had a vacuum or two on hand for that "just in case sale". He always had numerous parts for spontaneous repairs. He loved it when people dropped in.
He was an active member in many clubs over the years; Kirkland-Bellevue Elks No.1843 Horse Patrol, Elks lodge #995, Eagles Aerie #2337 Drum & Bugle Corp., The All Vets and The Dakota Anglers, where he was awarded top ticket salesman for multiple raffles. Howie was known around town as the "Ticket Man" because he always had raffle tickets in his pocket ready for the next sale to support one cause or another. His greatest joys in life were fishing, fixing things, and spending time with family and friends.
