Betty Martin, 78, died Sunday, June 1, 2025, surrounded by her family at her home south of Crystal Springs, ND.
Betty was born March 10, 1947, at the Turtle Lake Hospital in Turtle Lake, ND. She grew up in the McClusky area in the Carl and Rose Blumhagen household. They were both Germans from Russia, so German was the language spoken at home; Betty knew very little English when she began school. Her life was typical of a girl growing up in a small farming community in the 50’s and 60’s. She graduated from McClusky High School in 1965.
Betty’s social life centered mostly around the Evangelical United Brethren Church. It provided many social events for children and youth and many friendships were created along with significant mentors including Pastor Ted and Berniece Rath who were there for Betty after her dad died when she was 12. Betty met her future husband, Charles Martin, at a church youth event in Aberdeen, SD.
She and Charles were married in 1966 in the Evangelical United Brethren Church by the Rev. Ted Rath. They made their home in Bismarck. Charles was employed with Land O’ Lakes for his working career while Betty was a stay-at-home mom and also found work around her children’s school schedule. In 2011 they moved to the farm south of Crystal Springs where they resided in the summers and wintered in Mesa, AZ.
Betty enjoyed camping, traveling, going to threshing shows and spending time with Charles and her family and was especially proud of her grandkids. She was very creative, even decorating wedding cakes in her early days.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 59 years, Charles, her two daughters, Teresa (Scott) Marquart, Mandan, ND and Heidi (Robert) Roller, Monument, CO, grandchildren, Zachary, Hannah, and Zoe Roller. Half siblings, Vern Bohara, Karen (T.J.) Beckman, Allen (Beth) Bohara, special family, Doug (Donna) Schatz, Marilyn (Curt) Hedstrom, and Renae Sturkey, sister-in-law Colleen Martin, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by, Carl and Rose, in-laws, Israel and Erna Martin, sisters, Violet (Fred) Bohara, Delores (Floyd) Ahl, brother Ray (Marlene) Blumhagen, brother-in-law Dennis Martin, and sister-in-law Kay Bohara.
