Listen to Obituary

Anton Edwin Schweitzer passed away peacefully on December 4th, 2025, at SMP Health-Ave Marie in Jamestown, ND, at the age of 83. Anton was born on January 19th, 1942, to Alex and Regina (Scherr) Schweitzer in Wood Township, Emmons County, North Dakota, at his parents' farm home. Anton attended grade school in Kintyre and high school in Napoleon, North Dakota, graduating in 1959. Anton also spent one year at Berlin, North Dakota High School, where he lived on his Uncle's farm and worked for his uncle. Anton entered the Navy after high school graduation, serving his country, and was honorably discharged. He spent much of his Navy time on a boat in Europe, serving as an E-5 Quartermaster, and these years sparked his love for Europe, especially Spain. Anton married Francisca Ruiz Gomez (Paqui) in 1963 in Barcelona, Spain. After returning to North Dakota in 1963 with his spouse, Paqui, he lived in Bismarck, near his parents and brothers, and worked for several years at Twin City Testing before entering the University of North Dakota at age 27.

Anton was fluent in Spanish (and several other languages), and he and Paqui had several Spanish friends at the University. Anton loved UND and was especially happy coaching youth hockey and attending UND Hockey games at the "Barn", which led to a lifelong love of Sioux Hockey. After graduating from UND, Anton and Paqui moved to Arizona, where he attended American University and earned a master's degree in international finance, which led to a career as a financial manager for Multinational Companies in Europe, Central, and South America. And he ended his professional career at Halliburton in Texas, retiring due to illness. Anton owned a farm in Mineral Wells, Texas, where he tended to cattle and his love of horses. He later cared for his father, Alex, at the farm and went into partnership with his beloved brother, Jack Schweitzer.

Anton sold the farm and moved back to North Dakota to be closer to family, settling in Jamestown, North Dakota, where he made numerous friends at the Depot, fell in love with University of Jamestown Hockey, and began researching the Scherr family's history. Anton made several trips to Ukraine and throughout North and South Dakota to do archival research on the Scherr Family, interviewed numerous family members ( especially his Uncle Lawrence Scherr) and completed a book on the family that he shared with family members at Scherr reunions.

Anton entered Rock of Ages and later Ave Marie Nursing Home, where they took care of his need for dialysis and served him with loving care until his death. Anton always wanted to return to independent living, but soon realized his health prevented it, and he came to love the nursing home and its staff. While at Ave Marie, with encouragement and prayers, he returned to the Catholic Church, attended Mass on Wednesdays, received the other sacraments, and rekindled his love for our Lord.

Anton had a lifelong passion for learning and was well-versed in many aspects of European and American History and politics. Anton had a love for reading, family research, Classical and Spanish music, Westerns, his farm in Texas, Trail Rides with his horse, and watching his Sioux Hockey team on television. Anton kindled the love of baseball for his younger brothers, Alex and Lawrence, by coaching and teaching them the finer elements of baseball and taking them on trips to watch the Minnesota Twins. He was a lifelong fan of the Baltimore Orioles and his favorite player, Brooks Robinson.

Anton is survived by his three brothers, Jack Schweitzer of Andover, Ohio, and his spouse, Connie; Alex C. Schweitzer and his spouse, Arlene, of Jamestown, North Dakota; and Lawrence Schweitzer and his spouse, Susan, of Urbandale, Iowa. He is also survived by his beloved nephews and nieces: Terry, Scott, Jack Jr., Justin Schweitzer, Chris Potter, Jessica (Schweitzer) Thorlakson, and Nicole Schmid. Also by several grandnephews and nieces, and numerous Scherr and Schweitzer Cousins, and his Aunt, Bertha Scherr.

Anton was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Regina (Scherr) Schweitzer; his spouse, Paqui Schweitzer; his infant sister, Agnes Schweitzer; and his nephew, Jaime Waters, and niece, Rhonda Lockhart.
